Something special: community, connection and the Food Club

It’s not just us at Stockwood Community Hub who would say that Stockwood is a really special place to live. From its open green spaces to its strong sense of community, it’s the people who make it what it is.
But we also know that, for some residents, Stockwood can feel remote, isolated or a little forgotten about. While there is so much pride and warmth locally, there are also pockets of need where people would benefit from more support, connection and investment.
At Stockwood Community Hub, our work is about helping people feel more connected to the place they live. We want to create opportunities for residents to meet, feel welcomed, find support and discover what is already happening locally.
Sometimes that means running projects directly. Other times, it means connecting people with the brilliant groups, services and activities already in the area.

We also rely on a two-way approach, with local residents and volunteers helping to shape key decisions and local feedback guiding what we do next. We are always improving and learning, but with many of our team living in Stockwood, the community is quite literally at the heart of what we do.
One of the projects we run is Stockwood Food Club, a weekly food provision based at Stockwood Children’s Centre. The Food Club offers low-cost, good-quality fresh food and dried goods for people who may be feeling the pressure of the cost of living. Members can use it as much or as little as they need.

But the Food Club is about more than food. It is also a place where people can come in, have a cup of tea, chat with others and feel part of something. Many members live alone or may not have many opportunities for social contact, so being welcomed, known by name and offered a friendly conversation can be just as important as the food itself. These small moments can make a big difference.

We have seen people grow in confidence over time, from rarely leaving the house to becoming more connected in the community, meeting others and taking part in local life.
That kind of change is what community work is all about, and we are excited to keep building on this together.
Whether you would like to share an idea, give feedback, find out more about what is happening locally, or get involved as a volunteer, we would love to hear from you.
